Our Path to Homeownership…

About a year ago my fiancée and I really started discussing homeownership. We had been dating for two years, we both lived with our respective families, and we felt that our age and the status of our relationship we were ready to take the big step of homeownership.

We did discuss whether renting or owning would be best for us, and we agreed home ownership was the way to go. We felt that if we were going to be paying in excess of $1,000 a month for where we lived, we best get some equity out of it! When renting, you never get to see any of that money again…

After talking about it, we really didn’t know where to begin. We both had already started working on our credit history to make it more favorable for lenders, but one of us is having trouble getting their score up. I can tell you that credit-wise, we have both been SAINTS since we started dating each other… But we both made the same mistakes in the past. Right out of high school and in college we didn’t know how to manage credit well and we put some seriously ugly blotches on our credit reports…

Fast forward to earlier this year… We were working (and struggling) to fix our credit history… but when it came to finances, we didn’t know where to start… We couldn’t seem to save money on a monthly basis. The money came. The money went. At the end of the month, we had no idea where our money went…

We were lucky enough to be told about a program called NACA. I will be posting a very thorough description about this program and the steps of the program soon. FOLLOW THIS BLOG SO THAT YOU DON’T MISS IT! Anywho. My fiancée and I started the NACA program in July. This program is not credit score based like almost all lenders. This program checks to make sure you can AFFORD to be a responsible homeowner.

My fiancée and I have learned how to budget and how to save money on a monthly basis. We have our eye on the house keys prize. So much so that I packed up two boxes worth of books, frames and a few other items from my bedroom. No, we have not begun house hunting yet… But I am planning on succeeding. I am planning on becoming a homeowner in 2014. I will accept nothing less. We are working hard for it, and I can’t wait!

For my future home
